San Diego

Here we are in San Diego at BMW Motorcycles of San Diego. My bike developed a bit of an oil leak and they are dealing with it right away so it should be repaired this afternoon. It's okay though as it gives us a chance to accessorize the bikes a bit. We are staying with a long time friend of Neil's and we're getting a bit spoiled by it. Trying not to get too comfortable. Here's a few pics of the ride. They're not quite in order but you get the idea.

The start of Hwy 1 near Leggett, CA

More of the Oregon Coast Hwy 1
After Pacifica we went to Lompoc, CA which is near Vandenberg Air Force Base. It's a fairly small and quiet town but it was nice to get away from the tourist traps. We had nice weather for a beautiful ride along Hwy 1 on the coast. After we left Lompoc yesterday we finally saw the sun for the whole day and it was good. We managed to make it all the way to San Diego on HWY 1 and 101 except for about 20 minutes or so on the I-5 between LA and San Diego. It was slow going for most of the way but we also got a good feel for the kinds of towns and their industry along the coast. Everything from logging and sawmilling through Washington and Oregon, very intensive agriculture especially near Guadalupe, CA and heavy industrial through the Long Beach area. I know I'll want to come back and check out the coast a little better sometime.
So if all goes good we should hit Mexico tomorrow.

  1. Hey Neil and Mark, There are a few bike fans following your trip with great interest. Can you give us some details of your bikes? Thanks, Zippy

  2. Hey Zippy, we are each riding a 2006 BMW R1200GS. Very few mods have been done to the bikes other than upgrading to Ohlins suspension. Neil uses the BMW bags and I'm using Hepco-Becker luggage. No GPS. Doing it old school.
