San Cristobal de Las Casas

I know, boring, but we turned in early on New Years Eve. We got an early start on New Years Day though and was it ever worth it. We expected mucho traffic but there was almost none. I suppose everyone was taking advantage of the extra weekend day before heading home. We had an awesome ride on some more twisty roads (again) and we ended up in San Cristobal de Las Casas. As the photos show it is a really beautiful city. There are a lot of buildings here from the 16th Century. One thing that was striking to both of us was the change in apparent affluence of the people after we left the coast. There was almost no garbage on the side of the road anymore and the farms looked prosperous and the homes were a lot nicer. Up until now the garbage on the side of the road has been disgusting. I didn't even want to take a picture because I knew someone would accuse me of stereotyping.
The ride up to San Cristobal was very cool. Lots of switchbacks taking us up to just under 2200 m elevation. We passed lots of farms scratched into the hillside and the locals were mostly wearing their very colourful traditional dress. Very cool.

So we got a pretty good deal on the room in Huatulco. It was New Years Eve. These were the stairs to our room above the laundry.
